GAINING CHRIST: PHILIPPIANS 3:4-11 (Philippians 3:4-11)

Andrew de Kanter, November 19, 2017
Part of the PHILIPPIANS series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ... - Philippians 3:7
Last week we met a very religious group of people known as the Judaizers. This group had come to the gentile (non-Jewish) Christians at Philippi and told them that their relationship with Jesus was not enough. They even quoted from the Bible! The Judaizers were trying to convince the Philippians that what they really needed to do was adopt their religious practices.
Have you ever met someone known to be really religious? In Philippians 3, Paul gave his opinion of religiosity, but first he laid out his own religious pedigree and resume. Paul had the greatest and most religious resume ever (Phil 3:4-6), but after meeting Jesus, Paul summed up all his religiosity with one word "rubbish"...not just irrelevant, "rubbish." This is because the righteousness we produce in our own power blinds us from seeing our need for a savior, makes us judgmental of others and places hurdles between us and really knowing Jesus.
How are you known? Are you known as religious, or as someone who knows and loves Jesus?

By Grace,

Pastor Andrew
